Rude? You decide.
The scene:
A delivery man has an arm load of boxes and is trying to get into a building, a pedestrian is coming down the sidewalk.
The conversation, in Canada (anywhere but Quebec)
Delivery man, “Eh buddy nice day Eh?”
Pedestrian, “oh plenty nice but what are those clouds all about?”
“Oh aye, might get a little rain nothing to worry over”
“yep sounds ’bout right, here let me get those doors for you”
“Thanks, that makes it a bit easier for me, eh”
“You are most welcome glad to do it”
Same situation but in the US, (at least in central Pa)
“Hey bud, get the door will ya?”
“Sure”
“Thanks”
“uh huh”
And just for kicks, the same situation in Quebec.
“La porte Tabarnaque, la porte!”
*snicker* Uh huh…
Actually, I resent that.
I can see where a person would be offended by it,(and even that is a stretch) not sure why you would resent it. It is just an observation and its is general not directed at anyone specific. And which one did you find rude? I think they are all pretty rude, and at the same time just a cultural difference as I don’t think any of the situations is intentionally rude. Just something I noticed and found interesting.
I took the first two examples to be typical of polite society, while the 3rd was a slam at Quebec. Did I read it wrong?
How you read it is how you read it and who is to say who is right and who is wrong. From my point of view they are all rude. Americans do not (and of course we are speaking in generalities) say ‘you are welcome’ instead they say ‘uh huh’ and I find it on the rude side. In the Canadian scenario the poor delivery guy had to have a whole conversation before the other guy would open the door. The Quebec thing was a last minute add on and is funny was meant to be funny but it also the experiences I have had while living in all of the above places. And as always these are all generalities.
